Case Study: How We Designed Custom Hotel Wall Murals in Oakwood to Create an Interactive Local History Feature
In the hospitality industry, common areas like breakfast lounges are more than just places to grab a morning bite—they set the tone for a guest's stay. Today’s travelers seek authentic, locally inspired experiences and photo-ready spaces they can share online.
When JMS Family Companies reached out to us regarding their property, Candlewood Suites Oakwood by IHG (3757 Mundy Mill Dr, Oakwood, GA 30566), they brought a clear creative vision. Located right near Lake Lanier and Gainesville, the management team wanted a feature wall in their dining area that would pay homage to the rich regional history of Hall County while serving as an eye-catching photo backdrop for visiting guests.
Working closely with the client, Design Consultant Valentina leveraged our Dress Your Wall custom mural program to turn a simple topographic concept into a fully realized historical mural.
The Vision vs. The Design Challenge
The project began with a clear request from the hotel management team:
"Our hotel is in Oakwood, GA right by Lake Lanier/Gainesville. I want to make the mural something that attracts guests staying at our hotel. I was hoping the mural can be something guests can take pictures of and the mural paying homage to history of Lake Lanier/Gainesville."

Converting Initial Inspiration into Architectural Reality
The initial concept image provided by the client was a modern topographic navigation map showing Lake Lanier's blue water contours on a wood-grain backdrop. While sleek, a pure road map lacked the storytelling depth and vintage warmth the hotel needed to feel truly connected to Gainesville's history.
Valentina and our custom design team reimagined the layout into a multi-layered historic collage:
Centerpiece Topography: We retained the vivid blue, branching waterway silhouette of Lake Lanier as the central visual anchor, maintaining the geographic identity from the original concept.
Historical Vignettes: Flanking the lake vector are soft sepia-toned archival illustrations detailing key local landmarks—including early settlement log cabins, historic downtown Gainesville streetscapes, the Chattahoochee River banks, and the Buford Dam constructed in the 1950s.
Typography & Labeling: Clean, classic serif typography labels regional historical points of interest directly on the artwork, making the mural an educational, interactive conversation piece for guests.
Deep Visual Analysis & Architectural Integration
A look at the final installation inside the Candlewood Suites breakfast room demonstrates how artwork and interior design work hand in hand:
Framing and Proportions: The custom mural spans the full width of the main dining wall, perfectly centered between the side walls and framed below the dropped ceiling tray.
Lighting Synergy: Two matte black dome pendant lamps hang directly in front of the mural, casting warm light downward over high-top community tables. The soft, non-glare matte finish of the wallcover material prevents harsh reflections from the overhead ceiling spotlights.
Material Palette Harmony: The warm beige, sepia, and wood-tone background of the mural seamlessly coordinates with the blonde wood table surfaces, light ceramic floor tiles, and black metal fixture details throughout the lounge.
The Result: A High-Impact Regional Focal Point
The completed custom mural turned a standard hotel wall into a memorable destination point within the property. Hotel guests now have an engaging historical visual to explore while enjoying breakfast, giving Candlewood Suites Oakwood a distinct identity rooted in its local community.
