Case Study: How We Transformed a Soaring Staircase Accent Wall Using a Custom Wall Mural in Miami

Staircase landings are among the most visually demanding architectural features in a home. With their soaring double-height ceilings, awkward angles, and prominent placement in main living areas, these massive vertical expanses easily become imposing design challenges. Leave them painted in basic white, and you are left with a cold, towering wall that feels disconnected from the rest of the residence.
For a recent residential transformation on 22nd Road in Miami, FL 33129, our Design Consultant Manuela, based out of our South Miami Showroom, tackled a towering staircase wall that was desperate for warmth, scale, and artistic storytelling. By selecting a tailored design from our Custom Wall Mural collection, Manuela turned a stark vertical void into a breathtaking, gallery-worthy focal point.
The Challenge: Balancing Scale, Lighting, and Precision Cuts in a Two-Story Stairwell Accent Wall
Double-height stairwell walls require a careful design strategy to avoid feeling overwhelming or disjointed:
The Scale Void: The staircase feature wall stretched two stories high, framed by a sparkling crystal chandelier above and warm wood step treads below. Standard repeating wallpaper prints would have looked mechanical or chaotic across such a massive surface area.
The Lighting Shift: Positioned directly beneath two large, sun-drenched upper windows, the wall receives intense natural backlight during the day and direct spotlighting from the chandelier at night. The material needed to absorb glare while revealing subtle artistic details.
Complex Architectural Obstacles: The installation required precise wrapping around two high-set horizontal window frames, tall baseboards, and steep staircase angles—all working around active electrical wiring points for upcoming lighting sconces.
The Solution: An Etched Botanical Landscape from Our Custom Wall Mural Collection
Manuela selected a bespoke piece from our Custom Wall Mural collection—a romantic, sepia-toned landscape reminiscent of classic 18th-century etching and grisaille art.

1. Scale-Proportioned Artwork
Unlike standard rolls, a custom mural scales the artwork to the exact dimensions of the wall. The tall, ancient trees with detailed canopy foliage grow naturally upward along the wall’s vertical line, mirroring the ascent of the stairs. The horizon line sits comfortably near the landing, grounding the viewer before the composition stretches into soft watercolor clouds near the upper windows.
2. Tactile Canvas Depth and Light Diffusion
A close look at the video reveals the rich, tactile canvas-like weave of the mural. This textured substrate softens the intense natural light pouring in from the twin windows above, preventing harsh reflections. The delicate, ink-drawn lines of the tree branches and forest floor add incredible depth, giving the impression of a custom hand-painted fresco rather than a printed wallcovering.
3. Precision Engineering Around Architectural Elements
Installing a double-height mural requires meticulous craftsmanship. Our specialized installation crew perfectly trimmed around the twin window casings at the top of the stairwell without interrupting the continuity of the sky scene. At the base, the mural seats tightly against the bright white trim, creating a clean frame that grounds the warm wood staircase.
The Result: A Storybook Ascent
By introducing a bespoke custom wall mural in Miami, Manuela successfully anchored the entire two-story stairwell. What was once a cold, overwhelming white wall is now a captivating landscape that greets residents and guests with timeless elegance every time they walk up the stairs.
